This renewed drive to promote sailing comes as the Portofino Rolex Trophy. A momentous day in the history of sailing the inaugural Portofino Rolex Trophy was held between the 7^th and 10^th of May. The regatta was held on Italy’s most iconic port villages called Portofino located on the Ligurian coast. The Portofino village became the venue for a series of races devoted to what is known as ‘barca d’epoca’ or yachts that have made sailing history. The Portofino Rolex Trophy is open to 23 meter, 12 meter and 8 meter classes and features a bunch of spectacular on shore activities. Though this is an invitation only regatta, it still recognizes the importance of classic vessels that have played a key role in the history of mankind. Partnering Yacht Club Italiano, Rolex launched this one of a kind event that promotes these iconic yachts. The regatta will be held over three days, comprising 3 races on each day brining it to a total of 9 races that will be held on the waters of the Marconi gulf.

The winners of this event will be awarded with various trophies and prizes along with a Rolex Yacht-Master Rolesium. Beyond racing, the Portofino Rolex Trophy acted as a showcase for wooden one-design classes that includes the historic yachts from 1936, including the classes of Star, Class A, Finn, Snipe, Flying Dutchman, Contender, Fireball, Flying Junior, Vaurien, 7M, and 5.5M. The races that were sponsored by Rolex were structured by the Yacht Club Italiano, in partnership with Circolo Velico of Santa Margherita Ligure along with the support of the Cities of Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure. Apart from the racing each day will had social events that finally culminated on Saturday night into an exclusive Rolex Dinner Party at “La Cervara”. Varuna named after a Hindu god was one of the prized yachts that was taking part in this event. Owned by Luigi Donna this 12 meter intricately crafted vessel was brought back to life after careful restoration and was celebrating its 100^th year.

The Portofino Rolex Trophy is an effort by Rolex, to celebrate and create awareness about icons that have stood the test of time and still have the ability to rapture the mind, merely by the sheer magnificence of its indelible presence.
